I’ll be straight with you — this one’s tough.
I’ve worked in pharma for over 13 years and seen people suffer. I’ve seen families torn apart. And I’ve seen people who just wanted a way out.
I remember a patient I met back in 2021. Terminal cancer. Pain was unbearable. He asked me once — “What would you do if you were me?”
I didn’t have an answer then. I still don’t have a simple one.
Let me give you the facts. The rest is up to you.
So, What Exactly Are We Talking About Here?
Two different things.
Assisted suicide — doctor gives you the medication, you take it yourself.
Euthanasia — doctor gives you the medication directly.
Most countries that allow it use the first one. The patient is in control. That’s the whole point.
Where Is This Legal Today?
I checked the latest laws — 2026 data.
| Country/State | Status | Year Legalized |
|---|---|---|
| Netherlands | Legal (both) | 2002 |
| Belgium | Legal (both) | 2002 |
| Canada | Legal (MAID) | 2016 |
| Spain | Legal | 2021 |
| Portugal | Legal | 2023 |
| USA — Oregon | Legal | 1997 |
| USA — California | Legal | 2016 |
| USA — Colorado | Legal | 2016 |
| USA — Hawaii | Legal | 2019 |
| USA — Maine | Legal | 2019 |
| USA — New Jersey | Legal | 2019 |
| USA — New Mexico | Legal | 2021 |
| USA — Vermont | Legal | 2013 |
| USA — Washington D.C. | Legal | 2017 |
| Australia (some states) | Legal | 2019 onwards |
| New Zealand | Legal | 2021 |
UK, India, Pakistan, most of Asia — still illegal.
Why Do People Choose This?
The numbers tell the story.
Oregon’s 2025 report — 367 prescriptions, 278 actually took the medication.
Top reasons:
-
Loss of autonomy — 91%
-
Loss of dignity — 76%
-
Can’t enjoy activities anymore — 74%
-
Loss of bodily control — 55%
It’s not about being depressed. It’s about losing control.
Why People Support It
| Reason | Why |
|---|---|
| Autonomy | Your life, your choice |
| Dignity | Nobody wants to die slowly in pain |
| Control | Knowing you have an exit plan reduces anxiety |
| Compassion | Watching someone suffer is brutal |
Why People Oppose It
| Reason | Why |
|---|---|
| Sanctity of life | Life is sacred — don’t end it |
| Slippery slope | Vulnerable people might feel pressured |
| Medical ethics | Doctors heal — they don’t kill |
| Misdiagnosis | Some people recover or change their mind |
What Do Doctors Say?
2025 survey in the US — 1,200 physicians.
-
63% support it
-
27% oppose it
-
10% aren’t sure
In the UK, the British Medical Association still opposes it. They say vulnerable patients might feel pressured.
What About Palliative Care?
Honestly?
Good palliative care can solve a lot of this. Pain management. Emotional support. Dignity in death.
But it’s not always available. In some countries, it’s expensive. In others, it doesn’t exist.
If someone asks me — my first advice is always: explore palliative care first. If that fails, then talk about assisted suicide.
My Personal Take (Raw, Honest)
I’m a chemist, not a judge.
I’ve seen people die peacefully at home. I’ve also seen people die in ICU, tubes everywhere, families crying outside.
I’d want the first one. But that’s just me.
If I were suffering, with no hope, unbearable pain — would I want the option? Yes. But I’d want safeguards. I’d want a second opinion. I’d want my family to understand.
This isn’t about being pro-life or pro-choice. It’s about respecting someone’s suffering.
One More Thing — If You’re Struggling
If you’re reading this and feeling like you want to end things — please, talk to someone.
Your mental health matters. If you’re struggling, reach out. There’s no shame in it.

The Bottom Line (Honestly?)
Assisted suicide isn’t going away. More countries are legalizing it. More people are choosing it.
It’s a personal decision. It requires thought, guidance, and legal clarity.
I gave you the facts.
Now you decide.
