I’ll never forget the phone call.
My uncle was 62. Fit. Active. Never complained about anything. One evening, he felt a tightness in his chest. Thought it was just indigestion. Had some antacids. Went to bed.
Next morning, he was gone. Cardiac arrest.
I’ve been in pharma for over 13 years. I know the science. But knowing the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest didn’t help him — because nobody around him knew what to do. They thought he was fine. He wasn’t.
That’s why I’m writing this. Not to scare you. To make sure you don’t make the same mistake.
The Short Version
| Condition | The Problem | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Heart Attack | Circulation problem | Blood flow to the heart is blocked |
| Cardiac Arrest | Electrical problem | Heart stops beating altogether |
A heart attack is a plumbing issue. Cardiac arrest is an electrical issue.
What Is a Heart Attack?
A heart attack happens when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked. Usually by a clot or a buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries.
Without oxygen-rich blood, that part of the heart starts to die. The longer you wait, the more damage is done.
Symptoms:
| Symptom | What It Looks Like |
|---|---|
| Chest pain or pressure | Feels like squeezing or heaviness |
| Pain radiating | Arms, back, neck, jaw |
| Shortness of breath | Can’t catch your breath |
| Cold sweats | Sudden, unexplained |
| Nausea | Feeling sick |
Symptoms in women can be different — shortness of breath, nausea, fatigue, back or jaw pain. Sometimes there’s no chest pain at all.
What to do: Call 911 immediately. If you have aspirin and you’re told to take it, chew it slowly. Don’t drive yourself to the hospital.
What Is Cardiac Arrest?
Cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly stops beating due to an electrical malfunction. The heart’s rhythm goes haywire — often into ventricular fibrillation — and it can’t pump blood to the brain, lungs, or other organs.
Symptoms:
-
Sudden collapse
-
Loss of consciousness
-
No pulse
-
Not breathing or gasping
Cardiac arrest usually happens without warning. But in some cases, you might feel dizzy or lightheaded right before.
What to do: Call 911, start CPR immediately, and use an AED if available. Time is the difference between life and death. Every minute counts.
The Link Between Them
A heart attack doesn’t always lead to cardiac arrest. But it can. When a heart attack damages the heart muscle, it can disrupt the electrical system and trigger a cardiac arrest.
Risk Factors
| Risk Factor | Heart Attack | Cardiac Arrest |
|---|---|---|
| Coronary artery disease | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Previous heart attack | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Family history | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Obesity | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Diabetes | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Smoking | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| High blood pressure | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Inherited conditions | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
For people under 35, cardiac arrest is often caused by an inherited condition like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
For people over 35, coronary artery disease and heart attacks become the main culprits.
The Latest Research (2026)
Scientists are making real progress. In 2026, researchers published a study on using self-amplifying RNA to repair heart damage after a heart attack. Early results in animal models are promising — less scarring, better heart function.
There’s also new guidance from the ACC/AHA on treating acute coronary syndromes, with a focus on heart team decision-making for patients with complex multivessel disease and managing dual antiplatelet therapy carefully before surgery.
The 2026 CVIT consensus document also confirmed that primary PCI (angioplasty) remains the standard of care for STEMI, with new recommendations on complete revascularization and patient selection.
What I Tell People
I’m not a cardiologist. I’m a chemist who’s been in pharma long enough to know that heart disease is still the number one cause of death — and most of it is preventable.
If you have chest pain, don’t ignore it. If someone collapses, start CPR. And for the love of everything, learn the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest.
It’s not just medical knowledge. It’s a life skill.
