Whippets Drug

Most people don’t think of whipped cream as dangerous.

But the gas that makes it fluffy? That’s another story.

Nitrous oxide — also called laughing gas, whippets, or Galaxy Gas — has been around for a long time. Doctors and dentists use it safely. But when people start inhaling it from little silver canisters to get high, things go wrong fast.

I’ve been in pharma for over 13 years. I know how a seemingly harmless substance can mess you up. And whippets? They can mess you up bad.

Here’s what you need to know.

What Are Whippets Exactly?

Whippets are small metal canisters filled with nitrous oxide gas . You see them in whipped cream dispensers. That’s their actual purpose .

But people crack them open and inhale the gas to get a quick high . Some use a balloon to breathe it in. Others go straight from the canister .

The high only lasts a few seconds or minutes . That short duration makes people chase it over and over . That repeated use is where the real trouble starts.

The Short-Term Effects

When someone inhales nitrous oxide, the effects hit almost immediately . Here’s what you get:

  • Euphoria and giddiness — that’s why they call it laughing gas

  • Dizziness and confusion

  • Loss of balance and coordination

  • Slurred speech

  • Nausea

  • Dissociation — feeling disconnected from your body

It sounds like a party. But the party can turn dark fast.

The Long-Term Damage

This is where it gets serious.

Nitrous oxide messes with your body’s ability to process vitamin B12 . B12 is essential for your nervous system. When your B12 gets depleted, your nerves start to suffer.

Here’s what long-term use leads to:

Nerve damage. Your hands and feet go numb. You get tingling sensations. You might have trouble walking. A 2025 report from the NIH documented a 31-year-old man who developed subacute combined degeneration — a serious spinal cord condition — after using whippets for six months . He needed B12 injections and physical therapy. Even after treatment, he had residual weakness .

Paralysis risk. In severe cases, people end up unable to walk. Yale researchers reported that paralysis from whippet use can sometimes be reversed — if caught early. But not always .

Brain and mental health issues. Studies show nearly 48% of recreational nitrous oxide users who end up in emergency rooms present with psychotic symptoms. Hallucinations. Delusions. Paranoia. Another 35% have suicidal thoughts or self-harm behaviors . This isn’t rare — it’s happening to young people in their teens and twenties .

Organ damage. Frequent use deprives your organs of oxygen. Your kidneys and liver are at the end of the supply line. They take the biggest hit .

The Oxygen Problem

Here’s the thing people don’t realize.

When you inhale whippets, you’re displacing oxygen. Your brain gets starved. That’s what gives you the “high” — you’re literally suffocating a little bit .

In medical settings, nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen. That keeps you safe. Recreational users don’t do that . They get straight shots of pure gas. That’s how people pass out, fall, and sometimes die .

Are Whippets Addictive?

Not in the physical way like opioids or alcohol. But there’s a psychological pull . People chase that short high, and they keep coming back .

A 2024 review from the NIH found that the dependency potential is controversial, but excessive use — despite obvious health problems — suggests something real is going on . Users sometimes describe intense cravings. Some have taken naltrexone (a medication for addiction) to try to reduce that craving .

Who’s Doing This?

It’s mostly young people. And it’s getting worse. A 2022 US survey found nearly 14 million Americans aged 12 and older have misused nitrous oxide . In Europe, the prevalence in 15- to 34-year-olds shot up from 1.1% in 2019 to 2.7% in 2021 .

In Melbourne, a study of emergency room patients found the average age of nitrous oxide users was just 29 .

The Legal Side

Most people don’t know this, but using whippets for fun is illegal in many places . You can get fined. You can even go to jail .

In the US, it’s technically legal to buy nitrous oxide for legitimate uses — like making whipped cream. But possessing it with the intent to get high is a crime .

What I Tell People

I’m not a doctor. I’m a chemist who’s been in pharma long enough to see how a harmless-looking compound can cause serious damage.

Nitrous oxide is not a joke. The numbness in your fingers today could become permanent nerve damage tomorrow. The hallucination you laugh off could become psychosis.

And the B12 deficiency? It sneaks up on you. By the time you feel it, the damage is already done.

If you’re using whippets, stop. Thinking about trying them? Don’t. And if you have a friend who’s using, tell them what can happen. Get them to a doctor. Early treatment can reverse some of the effects . But not always.
